The announcement comes as the federal government continues to warn consumers to avoid whole and chopped romaine lettuce while it investigates a multi-state E. coli outbreak.

The CDC is warning people to not consume romaine lettuce unless they can confirm it is not from the Yuma, Arizona, growing region. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported. As for the source of the outbreak - well, that's a mystery, though an investigation is ongoing. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration say the Yuma, Arizona, growing region is the source, but no farm has been identified.

The case count by state in this E. coli O157:H7 HUS outbreak is: Alaska (5), Arizona (5), California (13), Colorado (2), CT (2), Georgia (1), Idaho (10), IL (1), Louisiana (1), MI (2), Missouri (1), Montana (7), New Jersey (7), NY (2), OH (3), Pennsylvania (18), South Dakota (1), Virginia (1), and Washington (2).

Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, do not eat or buy romaine lettuce if you do not know where it was grown.

The warning includes whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, chopped romaine, as well as salads and salad mixes containing romaine.

The three additional states affected by the outbreak are Colorado, Georgia and South Dakota.

California exploded from one case to 13.

With another 31 sick from E. coli O157:H7 since last Wednesday, the CDC now counts 84 people sick, with 42 hospitalized.

Cara Christ said, "E. coli can cause serious illness, so it is critical that everyone take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease". The 16-year-old from rural Sacramento, California, had been eating salad every day the week before she got sick. Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting.

The number of E. coli cases in Idaho has increased to 10, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Infections from these bacteria often take three to four days to develop.

"She told us, 'her kidneys are ideal, ' " Halley recalled.

Three of those individuals were hospitalized, and two developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome related to the E. coli infection.

"We went ahead and just pulled all of our romaine, disposed of it, we served salad through the weekend but they were made with spinach", said Wenig.
