Marquez eases to victory yet again in Austin

Marquez to start fourth after being stripped of Austin pole

The 25-year-old Spaniard took his first victory of the season in a dominant fashion.

But it was MotoGP's Twitter account that broke the bad news for the Honda rider.

"I have reviewed the race and it was a mess from the start". Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was pressuring teammate Vinales for third as Iannone held firm in second.

Speaking after qualifying, Marquez insisted he'd tried to move out of Vinales' way as quickly as he could - and that he hadn't noticed his rival sooner because he was preoccupied with Iannone riding slow up ahead.

Marquez, a six-time world champion across all categories, won his first series title at the 2013 race and has dominated at the track ever since.

Italy's Andrea Iannone (Suzuki GSX RR) maintained the lead for all of half a lap, when Marquez passed him, avoiding yet another penalty. "Today I was totally focused, as I wanted to remain ideal here at Austin".

By the time their bikes were ripping down the long straight halfway through the first lap, Marquez was on the hunt and he made an easy pass for the lead.

There was enough action behind the race leader with Vinales pursuing to take P2 from Iannone.

"We are coming", Vinales said.

"Marc and this track are another story", Iannone said. "We can improve, not a lot, but it's most important".

He said: "That race weekend, especially Sunday, was very tricky with very hard conditions and yeah, many things happened". Vinales took the second spot from Iannone and stayed there.

The battle for fifth place got a bit intense in the closing laps, but it was Andrea Dovizioso, who got the better of Johan Zarco.

Marc Marquez (93) of Spain leans into a turn during a free practice for the Grand Prix of the Americas motorcycle race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Saturday, April 21, 2018.

But the LCR Honda Castrol rider last night said he and the team deserved to be where they are, adding: "Sure, on Sunday or at the next race maybe I'll finish 10th and we won't be leading the championship but I think at the moment we deserve to be leading because we've done a very good job".
