United States mulls over fresh sanctions against Russian Federation for supporting Assad

US Ambassador Haley Lays Out Three American Goals in Syria, including ending Chemical Weapons and ISIS

WASHINGTON-The Trump administration said Monday that it is evaluating prospects for new sanctions against Russian entities and companies involved in Syria's chemical-weapons program, a day after a top diplomat said Washington was ready to impose new punitive actions.

The WH is reporting that Trump would not approve any additional sanctions without another triggering event by Russian Federation, and characterized Haley's comments as a misstatement.

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defences, in several areas of Syria to support Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was sacked by Trump, also compared the United States leader to a mafia boss and said he was "morally unfit" to be president, stoking controversies.

Several people familiar with the plan told the paper that Trump was upset with the sanctions rollout, and administration officials said the strategy was "in a holding pattern".

Haley appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS' "Face the Nation". "And that's why we're continuing to evaluate a number of sanctions". Trump is unlikely to approve additional sanctions against Russia until another triggering event by the Russians.

Haley made clear the United States won't be pulling troops out of Syria right away, saying US involvement there "is not done".

"I did not say that either the U.S. or France will remain militarily engaged in the long term in Syria", he said.

Does anyone know what's going on in this administration? No?

Russian Federation has vetoed at least six resolutions in the UN Security Council regarding chemical weapons.

"As a military spouse, I know that "mission accomplished" means you have one task now in front of you, and when it's completed, it is mission accomplished", Ms. Haley said.

Elsewhere, the Lithuanian foreign ministry said the Baltic state supported actions by the US, UK and France against the Syrian regime's chemical weapons facilities.

The list of sanctioned businessmen includes Oleg Diripaska, as well as Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller, VTB CEO Andrey Kostin, owner of Renova Viktor Vekselberg, President of Surgutneftegaz Vladimir Bogdanov, Member of Sibur Board of Directors Kirill Shamalov, businessmen Igor Rotenberg and Suleiman Kerimov.

Asked about Trump's "Mission Accomplished" assertion, White said it pointed to the successful targeting of the three Syrian chemical weapons sites.
