U.S. Vice President Mike Pence waves as he arrives at Jorge Chavez international airport in Lima Peru Friday

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday he was leaving a summit of Latin American countries in Peru very hopeful that the United States, Mexico and Canada were close to a deal on a renegotiated NAFTA trade pact.

Pence told reporters its was possible that a deal would be reached in the next several weeks.

'I think President Pena Nieto understands that he and President Trump have a difference of opinion on that, ' he said.

Pence claimed Trump's telephone for Mexico to cover for your US -built wall "didn't not come up" in meetings.

This comes two months after an attempt to schedule a meeting in Washington between Pena Nieto and the U.S. president was called off due to Trump's harsh rhetoric regarding NAFTA and immigration.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to kill NAFTA if it is not changed to secure better terms for USA workers and companies. Pence took Trump's place at the summit so the president could remain in the U.S.to manage the response to the apparent chemical attack by Syria.

Pence Saturday responded to a reporter's question about if the president overstated the outcome of Syria's mission.

Shortly before Trump's address to the nation Friday night, Pence was whisked away from the summit in his motorcade so he could return to his hotel to inform congressional leaders of the pending missile strikes.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was barred from attending the summit over his plans to hold a presidential election that the opposition is boycotting and that many foreign governments consider a sham.

Vizcarra says addressing corruption "is the utmost importance to us".

A global chemical warfare watchdog group says its fact-finding mission to Syria will go ahead even after the USA -led airstrikes.

"We believe that it has significantly eroded and crippled the ability of the regime to produce chemicals", Pence further claimed despite the fact that the previous USA administration was heavily involved in the process of Syria's dismantling of its entire chemical weapons arsenal back in 2014 in the presence of worldwide inspectors.

Pence was whisked away from the Summit of the Americas late Friday so he could inform US congressional leaders by phone of Trump's plans to announce the missile strikes.
