The New York Working Families Party voted to endorse Nixon with more than 91% of the vote.

"I am so proud to accept the endorsement of the Working Families Party", Nixon told the enthusiastic crowd of progressive and activist groups.

Part of Nixon's strategy to upset Cuomo in the gubernatorial race is tapping into the Black and Latino voter base, which Cuomo has historically received strong support from.

"The last eight years under Andrew Cuomo have been an exercise in living with disappointment, dysfunction, and dishonesty", said Nixon.

In the clip, she continues "There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana", adding "but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity".

According to the New York Times, Cuomo has asked labor leaders to withhold funds from groups that endorse Nixon, who has declined corporate donations and is running on issues including marijuana legalization, universal healthcare, and racial justice. NY state does have a medical marijuana program, though it is extremely restrictive. Executive director, Bill Lipton, says many in the party blame Cuomo for the continued control of the State Senate by Republicans, saying Cuomo didn't do enough to help Democrats win seats and mend differences.

He narrowly won the party's nod in 2014 over primary challenger Zephyr Teachout, and he faced the prospect of losing to Nixon on Saturday.

The Working Families Party said it was pleased to show independence from Cuomo, the Democratic Party's flagbearer.

Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Abbey Fashouer on Saturday said Cuomo's "record of progressive accomplishment is unmatched".
