Washington, D.C. (Friday, April 13, 2018)-Just two days after Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, announced he would not be returning to the U.

During an interview Friday, Ryan endorsed Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy as his successor. He had been expected to face a challenge from Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the majority whip, but Ryan suggested that Scalise would back McCarthy, echoing comments Scalise himself made Thursday. "Our leadership team, I'm saying", Ryan clarified.

"I fully anticipate handing the gavel over to the next Speaker of the House after this term, and I think Kevin's the right guy to step up", Ryan continued.

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise has announced he will run for speaker.
