Kathua, Unnao rape cases: PM Modi says victims will get justice

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Friday attacked Congress President Rahul Gandhi in his home constituency here in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra and her children (son and daughter) were also present. 12 years old (was) raped and burnt with petroleum.

But on Thursday, Gandhi was quick to seize the opportunity though he had by then faced enough flak on the social media for his silence on the matter. "Only outrage led to action from Adityanath government", he added. Today, women are feeling insecure to move out of their houses. "Young girls are getting raped and killed, the accused have been roaming free and our leaders are silent and think they can do anything they want. The women of the country should feel safe", he said. "This is a national issue and not a political one".

Talking about the objective of the march, Rahul Gandhi said, "We are here against crimes being committed against women, against rapes, violence and murder and the government must act on this". He also assured that the guilty would not be spared. "What is the point of 'beti bachao" [the government's "save the girl child' campaign] if investigations and inquiries in such cases are not done in a proper manner and evidence is allowed to be destroyed?" "We all will have to join hands and remove this evil from the society".

Subsequently, Rahul's aide Kaushal Vidyarthi called up the Congress president's office with a message: "Take him directly to India Gate".

Earlier, he had tweeted: "Like millions of Indians my heart hurts tonight".

He said Modi's silence over the rising atrocities against women was "unacceptable" and that India was waiting for him to speak up.

The Congress on Friday hold protest across the country, demanding justice for the victims.

The Congress leader said the BJP can inaugurate as many memorials as they like, "but the fact is that they are reducing sub-plans, financial allocations".

On January 10, an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua was kidnapped and raped again and again before being brutally murdered by a group of men to hound her nomadic Muslim tribe community out of the Rassana area of Kathua.
