The ranking was done on the preliminary research traffic and the passenger traffic results for the most traveled airports in the year 2017 which was released by the airports authority of India. "The award, which is also shared with Mumbai (BOM), the second busiest Indian airport, is based on a derived score from a battery of passenger satisfaction metrics", ACI noted. Nearly 1.5 billion passengers passed through the doors of these 20 airports, representing 17 percent of global passenger traffic. While Kolkata recorded an year-over-year growth of 26.9 percent, Hyderabad saw a growth of 19.6 percent, followed by Bengaluru at 12.9 percent, and Chennai at 10.5 percent.

Growing rapidly in relatively short period of time, India is poised to be one of the largest aviation markets in the world in the years to come, the ACI said. The top three in total worldwide air cargo traffic were Hong Kong, Memphis Tennessee and Shanghai airports.
