Apple Begins Notifying macOS Users That 32-bit App Support Is Ending

The notification, which appears once per app, states that "This app needs to be updated by its developer to improve compatibility", and points users to a support page on Apple's website explaining the situation in further detail. Specifically, you'll probably still be able to run 32-bit apps - but they might not work as expected. The statement that High Sierra is the last version to support 32-bit "without compromise" suggests some stop-gap measure in the next version of macOS. Apple chose to ditch support for 32-bit devices with iOS 11 and it promised to make a similar move for Mac apps as well. The alert is similar to the ones that appeared when Apple transitioned iOS from 32-bit to 64-bit.

Apple's next macOS major update will mark the end of the operating system's support for legacy 32-bit apps.

If you're using an old Apple Watch app that hasn't been updated in a while, you might run into some problems when watchOS 5 lands (likely sometime this autumn).

In addition to receiving the alert once when a 32-bit app is launched, Apple also lets users check for 64-bit compatibility through the system report feature. Apple is encouraging macOS users who see the alert to contact developers of the app, presumably to pressure them to make the move. For example, 64-bit architecture allows taking advantage of much more memory than 32-bit architecture does. The A7 chip, which powered the 2013 iPhone 5S, was the first 64-bit mobile processor.

Even still, the company has yet to specify exactly when it's planning to halt 32-bit app support entirely.

Apple is ostensibly hoping that by warning its users, it will prompt developers that know they have 32-bit apps running on Macs to update them and deliver 64-bit integration.

In the Finder, click on the Apple menu in the upper left and select About This Mac. Then scroll down to Software and select Applications. The latest beta of watchOS 4.3.1, which is sort of the watchOS equivalent of iOS 11.4, warns you when you try to launch an out-of-date app. The bar on 32-bit iOS apps was one of the key reasons the number of iOS apps in the App Store fell a year ago. Further, the company no longer accepts 32-bit apps into the Mac App Store.

Keep following us to get the next update from Apple on this matter.

"This application is not optimized for your Mac", says the warning. First, the Apple desktop OS has been around longer than the iOS.
