Amid Cauvery protests, Kamal Haasan sends open letter to PM Modi

Prime Minister to inaugurate DefExpo 2018 in Chennai on April 12

The Prime Minister is in Chennai to attend the Defence Expo 2018 and inaugurate four facilities at the Adyar Cancer Institute.

Amidst the rising political heat surrounding the setting up of Cauvery Management Board, Prime Minister Modi is making his visit to Chennai. The Tamil Nadu state unit of the Congress, out of power in the state and Centre, took part in protests last week to demand the constitution of the CWMB, a demand that is strongly opposed by the Congress in Karnataka. Makkal Needhi Maiam's Kamal Haasan had a message for Modi which he shared via a video in his social page. This is an open video to my honorable prime minister.

"I am very sure you are aware of the crisis that is gripping Tamil Nadu and the ongoing agitations for the Cauvery water", Haasan said referring to the hunger strikes, marches, and shutdown call demanding the formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

He also said that 'I think with your experience with Narmada Control Authority, you could easily deliver the justice that TN is seeking for'. I want this belief to be dispelled. "You must form the CMB to provide justice to the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka", he said. "I'm sure that you will do the needful, and you must", Kamal ended his note.

"The Supreme Court of India has already performed its constitutional role by delivering the judgement".

In the letter, Haasan said that the people of Tamil Nadu believed the BJP party's primary interest lay in the upcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka which, they felt, was a reason for the delay in setting up the Cauvery Water Management Board. The Centre also sought a three-month extension from the top court, arguing that if it framed a scheme before Karnataka went to polls on May 12, it would vitiate the election process and cause massive uproar amongst the public.
