Saudi Arabia intercepts ballistic missiles

Saudi Arabian military intercepted at least one missile above the capital Riyadh on Wednesday, Saudi-owned broadcaster Al Arabiya said.

Yemeni media reported that the army's remote control drones carried out a strike on the Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia's southwestern Asir region on Wednesday.

The Houthis claimed attacks on Abha airport and Saudi Aramco, located in Jizan, via Al-Masirah, publishing an infographic of the "Qasef 1" drone.

A total of 18 Houthi rebels were killed and almost 30 others injured in the gunbattles with the national army forces in southwestern city of Taiz, according to a statement revealed by the media center of the pro-government forces in the city.

"An Iranian ballistic missile launched from Sadaa towards Riyadh was successfully intercepted by Saudi Air Defence earlier today", Colonel Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Huthis, said.

The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV channel said the ballistic missiles targeted the Saudi Defense Ministry in Riyadh, among other targets in the kingdom's capital.

One of the drones was targeting the Abha global airport in Asir province, which led to a temporary suspension of air traffic, and a second was approaching a "civilian object" in Jizan province, he said.

More than 10,000 people, half of them civilians, have been killed with over two millions displaced in the three-year war.

The coalition accuses the Houthis of being armed and supported by Iran - charges the group and Tehran deny.

The Houthis and their allies have used the drones to disable Patriot missile defense systems deployed by Saudi-led forces in Yemen, said auto.

Evidence documented by the Conflict Armament Research group, or vehicle, said the Qasef-1 drone appears to be Iranian-manufactured and has been supplied in batches to Houthi forces in Yemen.

A missile fragment last month killed an Egyptian resident of Riyadh - the first death reported in the capital as a result of the missile strikes.

More recently, the Houthi movement claimed to have fired a ballistic missile targeting Saudi Aramco in the southern Saudi province of Najran three weeks ago.
