"Keep It Simple, Stupid" doesn't exactly sound like a typical automaker phrase, but that's certainly the strategy Ford is taking with the new Focus. The VW Golf was the best hatchback, Donald Trump was still hosting the American version of The Apprentice and "fake news" was merely a form of poor journalism.

Ford has pulled the covers off the new Ford Focus - the fourth generation of one of the most popular family cars on sale today.

Ford are also covering all the bases they can with the new Focus, delivering a regular five-door hatchback, and Estate, a high-riding Active and a posh Vignale.

Here we round up all you need to know about the new Focus. Other engines available include a new 1.5-litre "EcoBlue" diesel engine, a 2.0-litre diesel unit and also a 1.0-litre petrol EcoBoost engine. It's also built on Ford's new C2 vehicle platform, which the firm says improves cabin space, exterior aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

Ford has yet to release US specifications, but it says the new model will offer more interior space for all occupants as well as additional cargo room in some body styles.

The Ford Focus may not be the best-selling auto - or even the best-selling Ford - in the United Kingdom - that's the Fiesta - but globally it's only beaten by the massive sales enjoyed by the Ford F-150 pickup.

Ford Australia has confirmed it will receive its entire Focus range from the Blue Oval's factory in Saarlouis, Germany, which has been treated to a €600 million ($A957 million) injection in preparation for production of the new model.

Ford places a lot of emphasis on the new Focus' technology credentials, with majority coming in the shape of driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control with stop&go (active up to a top speed of 200 km/h or 125 mph), speed sign recognition and lane centering.

It will even park itself using the second version of Active Park Assist and the Pre-Collision Assist can now detect cyclists, as opposed to just pedestrians.

Vignale (£25,450): Unique front grille and body styling with 18in wheels, full LED lighting front and rear, leather upholstery, head-up display, rear view camera, heated steering wheel and the 675-watt 10-speaker B&O Play Premium Audio System. Ford introduced sportier ST versions of the Focus in China, which will start exporting the model to the USA beginning next year. These can be matched to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic. The 2019 Focus also gets Drive Mode Technology with three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Eco modes.

While it won't be standard across the new Focus line-up, Co-Pilot360 will be offered in different regions. "I am immensely proud of the team that has helped deliver what I believe is the best vehicle we have ever made", he added.

Ford's Pluak Daeng plant in Thailand, which provides the current Focus range (excluding ST and RS variants), will stop producing the Focus to concentrate on the Ranger and Everest.

Prices for the new Active models are still to be announced.
