Arizona Authorities Reinforce US Border Security

National Guard troops arriving at US-Mexico border

The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico on Monday committed 1,600 Guard members to the border, giving President Donald Trump numerous troops he requested to fight what he has called a crisis of migrant crossings and crime.

The US state of Arizona is deploying an additional 113 National Guard troops to the southern border to boost local law enforcement in countering narcotics and human trafficking and joining the core 225 already stationed there, media reported citing official statements. They will be the first of an expected 250 Guard members from New Mexico to serve on the border. About 250 troops now are near the border.

California and New Mexico, the two other states bordering Mexico, have not made public commitments to sending Guard members. Under the federal laws Trump invoked in his proclamation calling for Nationwide Guard troops, governors who ship troops retain command and administration over their state's Guard members and the USA authorities picks up the value. Fred Davis, a rancher who lives and works 25 miles from the border, said his community has been "screaming for somebody to do something for 30 years" and is in full support of Trump and Ducey.

Doug Ducey, a Republican, was present to send 225 troops on Monday. He said more National Guard members would be deployed this week.

Texas agencies posted images over the weekend of Guard members arriving at the border.

Some Guard members will be armed if they are placed in potential danger, Abbott said.

There is no end date for the deployment, Abbott said: "We may be in this for the long haul".

"I don't suppose it's a partisan downside or an id downside", he talked about.

"We're glad that they are coming", said one rancher who didn't want to be identified.

A Defense Department memo said "arming will be limited to circumstances that might require self-defense" but did not further define that.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Hull says troops are nowhere near deploying yet. "The Guard will provide air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of border infrastructure and logistical support".

Joel Villarreal, the mayor of Rio Grande City in Texas, said he did not agree with what he characterized as "the militarization of the border".

Brown's spokesman, Evan Westrup, said Monday that California is still reviewing President Trump's request for use of the state's National Guard members.

"The people that are suffering the drug overdoses, often times these products are coming over the border and through our state", he said. That erased a decline in apprehensions early in Donald Trump's presidency for which Trump repeatedly has taken credit. Yet, he acknowledged that the Bush and Obama administrations deployed far more National Guard soldiers, all with the same objective: To provide support for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
