Ronaldo thanks Juventus fans for ovation after video-game goal

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane warned his side not to underestimate Juventus

Juventus fans did not think twice before standing up and cheering Cristiano Ronaldo's overhead kick during the Italian football club's Champions League encounter with Real Madrid.

Dani Carvajal lifted a cross into the box towards the Portugal global, who rose in the air to produce a breathtaking acrobatic kick that flew past a helpess Gianluigi Buffon. "It was a great result, we have the second leg at home, we know that Juve are a great team so we have to be careful but we are happy, the team is very happy".

But it is his second strike that will be remembered for the years to come, taking pride of place in the highlight reels when Ronaldo decides he is finally done with the game; the image of the 33-year-old caught in mid-air executing the flawless scissor kick. I have to say thank you a lot - grazie - to all supporters of Juventus. They did it like a great, because only a great can hammer Juve in a stadium they had only lost six of their previous 178 official games.

There was little else for the Juventus fans to cheer on a night when their Champions League dream was ruthlessly crushed by Real.

Real's left back Marcelo later added a goal to their tally after he was set up by Ronaldo in the 71st minute of the game.

He may be 33 and approaching the twilight of his remarkable career but Ronaldo's goalscoring powers remain undimmed.

We put in a great performance, but Juve also did very well, put us under pressure and had the chances to score goals, but we were more clinical.

"There are two teams better than anyone and they are those that have [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo", Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

"There is absolutely nothing to blame the boys for", he said. I've never heard the fans applaud an opposing teams player until tonight. But everything happened against us.

Few would take issue with Allegri's assessment, not when Real have Ronaldo. With Ronaldo's goal-scoring exploits, Zinedine Zidane's men have taken a giant step in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. In the other game of the night, Bayern came back from a goal down to win 2-1 against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
