Facebook says Cambridge Analytica may have had data on 87 million users

"Like most of the hard decisions that we make, this is one where there is trade-off between values that people really care about".

Facebook has been reeling since a whistleblower disclosed that Cambridge Analytica, which assisted President Trump's election campaign, gleaned data on millions of Facebook users through an app written by a university researcher.

Search data: Schroepfer said in his post that "most people on Facebook" could have had any public information on their profile harvested by data companies. "Cambridge Analytica was supposed to be the arsenal of weapons to fight that culture war". This issue hit the spotlight late last month, with some users voicing surprise that Facebook had this information.

While Facebook plans on carrying out a full forensic audit of Cambridge Analytica's systems to get those answers, he said it has had to "stand down temporarily" while the United Kingdom government's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) carries out its investigation first.

Another step Facebook is taking: removing a feature that allowed users to search for a profile by entering a person's phone number or email address because "malicious actors have also abused these features to scrape public profile information", Schroepfer said in his post.

Facebook's new privacy policy has a new section explaining that it collects people's contact information if they choose to "upload, sync or import" this to the service. That netted Cambridge Analytica the data on the friends of those who responded to the survey, without their permission.

Promising that it will never sell users' information to anyone, Facebook said it has a responsibility to keep people's information safe and secure.

AdNews joined a global press call this morning with the CEO, which follows a blog post from the platform admitting that up to 87 million Facebook user details may have been compromised, not the 50 million initially touted by other parties.

Facebook revealed on Wednesday that tens of millions more people might have been exposed in the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal than previously thought.

Social media companies collect data on every click made on their websites and consider that information their property, leaving users unable to adjust access to it in privacy settings. Facebook will now make those apps "agree to strict requirements" before they can access that data in the future.

With its moves over the past week, Facebook is embarking on a major shift in its relationship with third-party app developers that have used Facebook's vast network to expand their businesses.

In another blog post, the company said users now have control over the ads they see.

"Knowing what I know today, clearly we should have done more and we will going forward".

In Congress, Mr Zuckerberg has faced demands by two other Senate committees that he testify.

Facebook is urgently trying to convey that it is working to protect user information, even if it has been negligent in that regard before.

The hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the morning of April 11 could result in an uncomfortable grilling from Democrats and Republicans who feel the social media giant is responsible for everything from fake news to online extremism.

What this means: Management apps may struggle to connect to Facebook, in much the same way that apps that use Facebook information for logins would.

It seems things are getting worse for Facebook.
