A leading Korea expert says the Trump-Kim meeting should be canceled

Kim Jong-un's Beijing visit comes at a time hardliners in both Washington and Seoul are spreading scepticism about North Korea's commitment to denuclearisation writes Se-woong Koo

He visited the South last month as the chief of the North's high-level delegation to the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Add South Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest South Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

The singers were the first popular performers from the South to appear in North Korea for 13 years.

Red Velvet's band member Joy gave the event a miss and only four of the members - Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Yeri - performed in North Korea.

The concert involved 11 South Korean acts and is part of a two-concert series titled "Spring Comes".

Reporters had originally planned to cover the event but were blocked from entering the venue over security concerns.

Kim Jong-un attended and enjoyed a pop concert featuring musicians from South Korea in Pyongyang.

North Korea, which has previously accused both South Korea and the United States of practising invading the North during joint military drills, has remained quiet. He shook hands with K-pop girl group Red Velvet, former Girls' Generation member Seohyun, and others.

Like the concert title, the performance had brought a "spring of peace" to the two Koreas, Kim was quoted as saying by KCNA, and expressed wishes for a "prosperous autumn".

The show's lineup also included a variety of slow-tempo songs that were chosen to please the North Korean audience.

It also noted that there is no indication Kim demanded changes or edits to the songs performed, though "the general public in North Korea is strictly banned from listening to K-pop".

None of South Korea's popular boy bands were invited to participate in the concert. The attendance of North Korea leader Kim Jong-un makes it an even rarer occurrence.

It is not known whether the North, which strictly bans its citizens from listening to K-pop, will air any of the concerts on TV, though a five-minute summary of the Sunday concert was shown Monday afternoon on the North's Korean Central Television.

Victor Cha, the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, recently told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that Trump couldn't have properly prepared for his upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un, and that it could end in disaster.

However, the U.S. has said that its leader will only hold talks with Kim if North Korea agrees to denuclearize, after Trump agreed to meet him. The phrase has not been mentioned since March 3, although there were a couple of favorable reports on North Korea's nuclear arsenal in the days surrounding Trump's acceptance of Kim's unexpected invitation.

"The whole objective of cultural exchange is to open the gates for better relations between the North and the South, which have been strained for a decade", said Kang Dong-wan, a professor at Dong-a University and a leader of the Busan Hana Center, an institute that helps North Korean defectors in the South Korean port city of Busan.

The process of negotiating with Pyongyang is full of traps, Green argued: "North Korean leaders have decades of experience trying to manipulate the nuanced arrangements associated with the [United Nations Security Council] mandate and USA alliances in Asia; so do some US diplomats, but they will not likely be at center stage [at the meeting]".
