Renee Zellweger as Screen Icon Judy Garland in 'Judy'

Renee Zellweger

We will see Garland in London, where she traveled to perform what would turn out to be her final concerts. This period of Garland's life-from December 1968 to her death in June 1969-has been chronicled before in a stage musical called End of the Rainbow, which was nominated for three Tony Awards in 2012.

Starring alongside Renée will be Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock and Michael Gambon. She can also sing, as evidenced by her turn in the Best Picture victor Chicago, and Judy is poised to feature a number of songs including "Over the Rainbow".

Principal photography began on the picture today (Mar. 19) in London. Last year, she appeared in Same Kind of Different As Me with Greg Kinnear and Djimon Honsou.

Opening in the English capital in the winter of 1968 as Garland arrives for a five-week run of sell-out concerts, the movie will also recount the icon's battles with management, and relationships with musicians and fans.

The film, which is now shooting, also explores Garland's exhaustion at that time and how she was "haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood". Zellweger has sung before in "Chicago", when she played Roxie Hart in 2002.

She'd struggled with drug and alcohol addictions for years, went broke and was strung out on barbiturates when she died of an overdose at the age of 47. No word yet on when "Judy" is set for release, though it's expected in theaters sometime in 2018.
