Cirque du Soleil performer dies in fall during Florida show

A Cirque du Soleil performer died Saturday night after he fell during a performance in Tampa, Florida. The 38-year-old performance artist died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.

Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, said Mr Arnaud was "loved by all who had a chance to know him", and his loss would be hard to move past.

Cirque du Soleil said they are gathering more information about the tragic incident and are working with authorities to determine the circumstances of the accident.

The company cancelled its remaining Tampa shows.

He fell approximately 20-feet, and after he fell, the witness said, the man did not move.

Although the death appears to be accidental in nature, the Tampa Police Department and OSHA will conduct an investigation into the incident as is standard protocol. The artist was immediately carried out of stage to receive assistance.

The last 2 shows of Volta scheduled for Sunday were canceled.

"The entire Cirque du Soleil family is in shock and devastated by this tragedy".

The death is the third fatality involving a Cirque performer in the company's 34 years, said Lamarre, adding that the aerial strap act is seen as a relatively safe number.
