Police get 150 reports of suspicious packages

Austin police investigate an officer-involved shooting on La Naranja Lane

Residents of the Texas capital responded on Tuesday, reflecting the tension that is gripping the Texas capital.

The FBI dispatched behavioral profilers, evidence collection teams and bomb technicians.

Tina Sherrow, a retired agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the materials to build such bombs are commonly available at hardware stores or online, and that police have been mum on details because the perpetrators may be watching media coverage. State and federal prosecutors are also involved in the investigation that has grown to over 100 law enforcement officials. "You knew that something bad was happening", Reynolds said, adding that the victim's body was riddled with holes as emergency responders took her out of the house and into an ambulance.

But with little to go on so far, police are pleading with the public for help. Gov. Greg Abbott offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

"Please partner with us on this".

Castillo's parents said they carried blankets to her because the explosion ripped off some of her clothing, she said. "Call 911 immediately if you receive something suspicious", he said on Twitter. "It's just a grandmother, you know what I mean?"

But in the Monday morning case, a package was brought into the kitchen and opened before it exploded and killed the teen. On Tuesday, the one-story brick building still showed signs of the carnage, with plywood in place of the front door and wall paneling torn away.

"It's just a regular family neighborhood", he said.

Manley pointed to that explosion when asked Tuesday about the injuries people have received from the bombs.

Two people have been killed: The first blast killed 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House on March 2. "These are traumatic, penetrating injuries, along with a concussive wave that can cause significant injuries". Manley said the woman who was injured in that attack is a 40-year-old woman who remains hospitalized. His mother is in stable condition.

Anna Marie Castillo said she lives five houses from that blast site. "It's an absolute tragedy that he's no longer with us".

A package bomb that killed a teenager and wounded a woman Monday in Austin is probably linked to a similar bombing that killed a man elsewhere in the city this month, authorities said, and investigators are considering whether race was a factor because all of the victims were black.

Mason has not been officially identified by the Austin Police Department as the victim in yesterday's blast, which also severely injured a woman in her 40s.

The bombings come as the city is hosting the SXSW festival, which has attracted global leaders in business, technology, music and film.

Festival organizers said their security staff were on high alert.

"Under no circumstances should you touch them, move them or handle them in any way", he said.

Police said the powerful devices were similar to one another, all of them packed in parcels that were delivered at night, but not by the U.S. Postal Service or any commercial package delivery company.

"There are similarities that we can not rule out that these two items are, in fact, related", Manley said. Some have changed their habits when it comes to handling packages.

Mike Sullivan, a Postal Service spokesman in Austin, said the service has maintained strict security protocols for handling unsafe packages since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Manley said the packages are "average sized delivery boxes, not exceptionally large" that the residents found outside their houses.
