Gary Neville has tweeted a message of support to Jamie Carragher

GK David De Gea

"Hopefully going forward I can show the real me, I don't feel like that's a real representation of me".

Carragher was due to be working for Danish channel TV3 Sport to cover the match between Manchester United and Sevilla.

A video taken from the vehicle, released on the website of several British newspapers, clearly shows Carragher spitting. Carragher then winds down his window while the girl's dad winds down his passenger-side window.

In a tweet on Sunday night Carragher wrote: "Totally out of order & Ive apologised personally to all the family this evening".

At first the driver is unaware of what has happened and laughs until the girl says: 'He spat at me'. Driving away from Old Trafford the family of United supporters spotted Carragher in his auto next to them in traffic.

Carragher, who has two children, said he would condemn someone else had they behaved in a similar way.

So, Jamie, I'm recoiling watching that, it's disgusting. "There's not a person in the world who can condone spitting no matter what's gone on". Surely he's got to see the fact there's a young girl in the vehicle. he's got kids himself! As I said, it's hard to explain the moment of madness, that four or five seconds where I've lost it.

The former Liverpool defender turned pundit has since apologised for his behaviour on multiple occasions.

Sky realise he's good box office, he's great business, and I'd be very surprised [if he was dimissed]. "This a bad stain on me, my character, my career".

Speaking on Sky News Carragher said, "It is my biggest regret, of course, all of it is, getting involved in that situation".

Carragher met with bosses of the broadcasting giant in London on Monday in the wake of the incident which took place on Saturday afternoon. They have been dragged into this media storm by myself because of my actions. "I've let my family down but I've let the family in the auto opposite me down".

Carragher stressed that he hoped to apologise to the family again face to face.

As the Sky Sports pundit today met with TV bosses, the web was flooded with a series of amusing pictures and video poking fun at the star.

"I have brought shame on the name of football". We were sitting around a table in a bar in Malaysia on an England Under-20 tour and, as he explained at the time, he had had quite a few and it was a long way to the toilet.

"I love my job and would love the opportunity to stay. With the impact of the story there was no need to send him to Old Trafford for the game", said Norrelund.

"I've just watched Jamie Carragher say sorry", he said. No excuses he's made a big mistake.

Former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton called the act "absolute madness".

RadioTimes.com understands that a decision about Carragher's future at Sky has yet to be made.

'That devastates me more than anything.

"Spitting at anybody is despicable - he knows that, I know that, anybody listening knows that", Murphy added on talkSPORT.

Former Everton, Manchester City and Bradford City winger Peter Beagrie was sacked from his job as a Sky Sports pundit past year after being convicted of an assault on his partner and sentenced to a 12-month community order.
