US Secretary Tillerson warns African countries against Chinese loans

Tillerson falls ill on Africa tour, cancels events

At Tillerson's two news conferences on Friday, in Djibouti and Nairobi, the typical arrangement for news conferences involving the secretary and his counterpart in the host country were changed, American reporters travelling with Tillerson said.

Tillerson arrived in Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous nation, on Wednesday on the first leg of his African visit.

"The United States and the AU share a commitment to combat corruption, which in turn improves the conditions for free and fair trade, enables an open environment for business, and sets the stage for good governance, the readout said".

The growing Chinese lending to the continent has also attracted criticism from some Africans, who say China's agenda is to feed its appetite for African raw materials like oil, timber and minerals, and secure contracts for its firms.

This amount is over a three-year deal in loans and assistance to the African continent. According to him, Africans are mature enough to engage in partnerships of their own volition which will be useful for the countries and the continent.

During a joint press conference with the African Union Commission chairman Thursday, Tillerson expressed US interest in strengthening ties and continuing trade with the continent.

Stating his reasons for tendering resignation, the Premier said he chose to resigns as Prime Minister and Chairman of EPRDF so as to add momentum to the ongoing reform and to be part of a solution.

Tillerson said he and his African counterparts had "a very good exchange on various ways that we can consider creating a more sustainable and certain funding model for the counterterrorism efforts both - not just through the G5 Sahel, but also AMISOM and other activities to win the war against terror on the battlefield".

The emergency rule was aimed at restoring peace and security in the country.

Tillerson reiterated previous calls for African states to cut ties with North Korea.

Investments underscore just how much China is outpacing the U.S.in Africa.

In a symbolic display of that connection, the African Union headquarters where Tillerson and Faki met was built by China; there is a plaque inside the building that notes senior official Jia Qinglin attended the opening ceremony in 2012.

He will then visit Kenya, a key US ally in the fight against al Shabaab Islamist militants in Somalia, before traveling to Chad and Nigeria, which are also battling to contain Islamist insurgents. Numerous governments called in USA diplomats to demand an explanation. It is ridiculous. Without funds, how can you develop a country?
