Woods misses cut at Riviera; Cantlay, McDowell lead

The California native grew up playing Riviera, and it was where he played his first PGA Tour event as a 16-year-old in 1992.

Still troubled by his driving and putting, Woods made only three birdies during his second round and had more bogeys than scores of par.

His next shot sailed right, drifted a little more right and was never heard from again.

Woods had three straight bogeys early on the back nine Friday and didn't play well enough to make up for his misses.

"I swear, playing in front of all that, he gives up half a shot a day on the field", McIlroy said after he was able to rise above the bedlam and play himself into contention with a 69 to go with an opening-round 71. I did a lot of good things, everything's good.

The Genesis Open is very much up for grabs, and things may be even tighter near the top of the leaderboard once the second round is completed Saturday. He needed 32 putts. On the plus side, he has two more days of practice before entering the cauldron of PGA National for next week's Honda Classic.

Woods has won seemingly everywhere - except for here.

Cantlay, the No. 1 amateur in the world when he played at UCLA, had to wait until the end of Friday to see if the lead held up.

"He hit some great drives coming in".

He said his game for the past several months had been much better than those results indicated. He three-putted three times on the back nine alone. "Give him a little bit of time". Thomas went on to make the 20-footer for birdie, so you could say his ball eventually obliged.

This was Woods' third competitive event since last February after another back injury forced him to withdraw from a European Tour event in Dubai. 'You know, no one's going low out there, it's too hard, Woods said. No surprise there that Cantlay is leading the field or that the field leader in strokes gained on approach shots is winning this tournament. He shot 5-over 76 and was projected to miss the cut, which was likely at 2-over.

This week the missed fairways were joined by plenty of missed greens and, on Friday, missed putts.

And yes, there was progress with the driver, but his irons were largely, woefully off-target.

Woods has no such weekend excitement to look forward to.

McIlroy and Woods then mixed the sublime with the frustrating for the rest of the day. His playing partner Rory McIlroy, who finished five shots off the lead after a gutsy round of 69, might have been stretching it when he said Woods was "very close" to playing well, but he was spot on when he called for patience.
