What Tom Izzo said after Michigan State's 65-60 victory over Northwestern

No. 2 Michigan State matches largest comeback in a decade with 27-point rally over Northwestern

With the Spartans clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, Bridges hit two free throws and Winston added two more to make it 63-57.

Michigan State: The Spartans host IL in their final home game on Tuesday. Jaren Jackson had the go-ahead three-point play to finally give the Spartans their first lead.

While beating Northwestern isn't some sort of monumental achievement this season, Michigan State didn't have a huge comeback win this season.

"They (Northwestern) deserved to win", said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. They outplayed us for two-thirds of that game in every fashion - offensively, defensively. Izzo is 34-4 against Northwestern during his 23-year tenure.

Vic Law led the Wildcats (15-13, 6-9) with 21 points and five assists but he scored only three points after halftime. Nick Ward finished with 15 points and Jackson Jr. added 11.

Law, who had not scored in double-digits since January 31 against Minnesota, finished the first half with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Five of the Wildcats' previous six games were on the road, but back-to-back road losses to Maryland and Rutgers had Chris Collins eager to return home.

The Wildcats led at that point, 43-16. Seven straight points by law and a Scottie Lindsey three-pointer put Northwestern up 20-6 with 11:08 in the first half.

Northwestern scored just 11 points in the second half and went 3-of-26 overall after connecting on 18 of its 30 field goal attempts in the first half.

"In the first half our defense let us down", said Izzo. "I told my team after, we're setting some new records at Michigan State - best start, best this, best that".

They were up 49-27 after a stunning first half that had fans chanting "Overrated!"

"I think you could sense that when we got it down to nine that they (Northwestern) were getting very frustrated", said Winston. MSU shot 54 percent from the floor in the second half after going 8-of-24 before halftime.

It was a different Northwestern team as well. The Spartans will likely have their first team shoot-around just hours before the 2 p.m. ET tip-off due to a concert by country music group Little Big Horn, which will take place Friday night in the multi-purpose venue.

Michigan State: With their two remaining games against bottom-five Big Ten teams - last-place IL and Wisconsin - the Spartans are in good position to finish first in the conference. The Spartans now have the inside track to a regular season Big Ten championship after losses suffered by both Ohio State and Purdue this weekend.
