Australia completed a world-record Twenty20 chase as they hunted down a staggering target of 244 against New Zealand at Auckland.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill hammered a 49-ball century against Australia at Eden Park as the Kiwis racked up 243-6 - only to see David Warner's charges trump that total with seven balls to spare.

When Guptill scored his 58th run, he overtook Brendon McCullum's tally of 2140 runs and now has 2188 runs in 73 T20Is.

Kane Williamson scored 72 runs in 46 balls.

The T20 worldwide between Australia and New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland on February 18 proved to be a run-fest with Aussies beating the Black Caps side by five wickets. From Kiwi opener Martin Guptill becoming the highest run-scorer in Twenty20 matches to Australia setting a new world record by chasing down the highest total ever in a Twenty20 global.

Mitchell Grimstone, a 20-year-old New Zealand spectator, caught Ross Taylor's six in the stands that helped him win New Zealand dollars 50,000 (Rs 23,75,500).

New Zealand has one win from two games after beating England by 12 runs on Tuesday.

Along with de Munro, Guptill added 132 in just 64 balls and set the stage for a mighty target.

At the start of Australia's innings, David Warner, who made 59, and D'Arcy Short, who made 76, flung the bat with abandon in the powerplay, improbably racing ahead of the rate in reaching 91 without loss after six overs.

Billy Stanlake, who took two wickets with his first two balls against the Black Caps in Sydney 10 days ago, shared the new ball and was greeted similarly as Guptill followed up a ramp-shop by pumping the bowler back over his head for a huge six.

Short went on to score a career-best 76 off 44 deliveries, which included eight boundaries and three sixes, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Trent Boult. "It was a very good surface, small ground".

Williamson said such a high-scoring game was bound to happen at Eden Park when conditions were right and there was little his players could do to stem the flow of boundaries.

It's the highest successful run chase in global T20s. All the bowlers will feel it today, tough to swallow, but we need to bounce back.
