Trump again proposes near-total cut to Great Lakes cleanup funding

President Trump has proposed cutting by 90 percent the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

The Trump Administration's infrastructure plan isn't exactly generous to the Great Lakes, either: the 1.5 trillion dollar proposal to help improve roads, bridges and water infrastructure doesn't appear to include any funds to help improve the Soo Locks so they can handle getting bigger ships across the lakes. Well, it's time to stand up again.

Environmental Protection Agency money for Lake Champlain and other waterways across the country would be eliminated, with a plan to have the EPA "encourage state, tribal and local entities to continue making progress".

President Donald Trump released his budget proposal for 2019 on Monday, and it once again calls for massive cuts to funding for Great Lakes restoration efforts. And if freshwater resources are allowed to degrade, the impacts are enormous. It "plays a leading role in preserving and restoring the Great Lakes ecology while strengthening the Great Lakes economy", Huizenga, co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, told the Detroit News.

But under President Trump's proposed budget, funding would plummet to only $30 million, meaning the restoration initiative would be losing a whopping $267,963. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), unsurprisingly, given that she authored the initiative in 2010 and has continued to champion it since. "If there's one thing we've learned, we can't take it for granted that others understand how important our water is". Debbie Stabenow, Michigan, co-chair Great Lakes Task Force (D): "I am pretty shocked after the major bipartisan effort that we had, and the push-back was so hard after they zeroed out the money past year".

"The Trump Administration missed a major opportunity to help communities restore their water infrastructure".

Trump's budget would give it $30 million.

In a statement released today, Kildee calls the cuts reckless.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative aims to protect the lakes from pollution and invasive species. It's clear that when it comes to the Great Lakes our priorities are at odds with the administration. "I will fight these draconian cuts in every way that I can", he said.
