Giants to hire Shula as offensive coordinator

What can the Giants expect from new offensive coordinator Mike Shula

It obvious Mike Shula was not the Giants first choice as their offensive coordinator, but if he's not calling the plays, it doesn't really matter. Shula was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator after Gettleman was hired as the Panthers' general manager in 2013.

The Panthers fired Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey in the wake of quarterback Cam Newton's two-year regression from his MVP form of 2015. Gettleman was sacked last May.

Shula, 52, is the son of Don Shula, the NFL's all-time winningest coach.

With an offensive minded staff put in place, starting with their head coach, the Giants have some tough sledding ahead of them. Shurmur and Stefanski worked together in Minnesota in 2016-17.

National Football League teams can't block head-coaching interviews, so DeFillippo's sitdowns with the Bears and Cardinals last month circumvented his own team.

The Vikings offer a solid foundation, albeit for one huge question mark under Stefanski's nose at quarterback, for which the coach to make another case for a promotion. Shurmur was more likely eying others, and hinted at his introductory news conference in mid-January that some of those candidates were "not now available" due to their involvement with playoff teams.

For the Giants, it's about trying to squeeze more out of a 37-year-old Eli Manning in 2018 and developing young quarterbacks like Davis Webb and a potential No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.

Shula wasn't exactly on the radar during the team's search, as most thought either Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski or Philadelphia Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley would be the guy for the job. It seems unlikely the Eagles would have granted permission to their rival, however. Bevell fits ownership's mandate of an experienced coach who previously worked with quarterbacks.

But hiring Staley to his first coordinator job would have required hiring a separate quarterbacks coach. Mike Shula was also the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator from 1996-99 and the head coach at Alabama, his alma mater, from 2003-06.

NFL Network reported Shula would be formally introduced this week and also hold the title of quarterbacks coach.
