Ruling Party Votes To Recall South African President Jacob Zuma

President of South Africa Jacob Zuma gestures during the 54th National Conference of the ruling African National Congress at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg South Africa

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has formally asked President Jacob Zuma to resign, a senior party official has confirmed.

The President has not yet responded to his party's announcement that he must leave office, despite the ANC selecting his successor.

The ANC said on Tuesday that he had agreed in principle to step down, but only if he could oversee a transition lasting three to six months, a condition the ANC rejected. If he doesn't resign, a vote of no confidence has been scheduled in parliament for February 22, which could lead to Zuma's removal from office.

South Africa is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019.

Ramaphosa, 65, went to meet Zuma late on Monday before returning to the meeting that sealed the president's fate.

Zuma has survived several such votes in the past, but on those occasions he could count on loyal voting from ANC lawmakers, who form the majority in the Assembly.

South Africa's cabinet meeting set for Wednesday has been postponed indefinitely, the government's communication service said.

But Magashule, during the media briefing at Luthuli House, said that it would be expected that Zuma would respond today.

He spoke respectfully of Zuma, saying the president had contributed to the struggle against apartheid and had not been "found guilty in any court of law" despite various scandals over the years.

If Zuma resigns, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa will fill the vacancy until he is elected and sworn in by South African Parliament.

Despite the damning decision to order Zuma's "recall" - party speak for "removal from office" - domestic media said the 75-year-old might yet defy the party's wishes.

Heavily armed South African police raided the luxury home of the Gupta family on Wednesday as part of a probe into allegations the three brothers had corrupt links with President Jacob Zuma, who has been ordered by the ruling ANC to quit as head of state.

National Director of Public of Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams also announced on Tuesday that he had given prosecutors until next Friday to recommend to him whether to reinstate corruption charges against Zuma.

Speaking to the SABC on Wednesday, the embattled leader said he has not been given enough evidence to enable him step down as the president.

The ANC once commanded moral stature as the party of Nelson Mandela, but scandals linked to Zuma, who denies wrongdoing, have cut into its popularity.

The impasse has plunged South Africa - the continent's most developed economy - into confusion over who is running the country, with national events cancelled last week including the annual State of the Nation Address to parliament.
