Emily Sweeney Is OK After That Scary Olympic Luge Crash

It takes a certain type of person to even attempt the skeleton. Here's Italy's Joseph Luke Cecchini

Sweeney began to lose control coming into the turn 9 and bounced off both sides of the track, coming off her sled.

While she lay unmoved on the ice for some time as her understandably anxious parents watched on, she was eventually cleared by medical staff and walked away.

Sue Sweeney, centre, the mother of Emily Sweeney of the United States, cries out as her daughter crashes on the final run during the women's luge final.

Luge involves one person on a sled hurtling down a track and Sweeney was on her final run of the day.

"I know I caught a good amount of air going in to (turn) 12, and I just couldn't stop it", Sweeney told NBC after the accident.

"I don't think Curve 9 is risky, but I am anxious because it's technical", Mazdzer said in a video for NBC, explaining how it can throw a luger off by tenths of a second, which can be the difference in a medal.

You can check out the crash in the video below. She was being taken for further evaluation, but a USA Luge spokesperson said he wasn't sure whether she would undergo concussion protocol.

Sweeney, 24, is competing in her first Olympics after missing out on a spot in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

She was able to walk toward the finish about 10 minutes after the crash, albeit very gingerly and with some assistance from team and on-site medical personnel. She was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

The track was then reopened, with German star Natalie Geisenberger claiming the gold medal for the event.
