The Royal Danish House confirmed the sad news that His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark has died at the age of 83. We've picked out a few of our favourite photos from a royal life that was lived to the full.

Prince Henrik of Denmark, husband and consort of Queen Magrethe II of Denmark, has passed away.

With a jovial face framed by understated glasses, the prince had a reputation as a bon vivant who enjoyed cooking, poetry and wine.

Born Henri Marie Jean Andre de Laborde de Monpezat on June 11, 1934 in Talence, near Bordeaux, Henrik spent much of his youth in Vietnam, then a part of Indochina, where his father was a businessman.

In 1950, he returned to Hanoi and graduated from the French upper secondary school there before studying law and political science at the Sorbonne in Paris.

His eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, left the Winter Olympics and returned to Denmark to be by his father's side on February 9.

After a 2009 Danish referendum supported sexual equality in royal successions, Henrik said: "I hope that men will be as equal as girls", spurring further debate and briefly finding support in parliament in favour of granting him the title of king, a movement that came to nothing.

He retired from public service in 2016, then announced he did not want to be buried next to his wife because he was never made her equal.

In one of the world's oldest kingdoms that prides itself on having a stable royal house with no scandals, Henrik caused one in August 2017 by announcing that when he died he did not want to be buried next to Margrethe in the cathedral where the remains of Danish royals have gone for centuries.

Crown Princess Mary, who is Frederik's wife, visited Henrik in hospital in Copenhagen on Friday along with two of her children, the newspaper also said.
