Chrome will start marking HTTP sites as 'not secure'

When Chrome version 38 rolls out all HTTP sites will be marked as not secure in order to warn users.

The most common uses of HTTPS have been for sites who deal in the exchange of money with services such as online shopping or online banking.

The move comes after Google began downranking HTTP sites back in 2015.

Starting July, Google's Chrome browser will start labeling any site and any web page still using HTTP as "not secure". Mozilla started this trend in December past year when engineers started laying the groundwork for Firefox to mark all HTTP sites as "Not Secure" as well. In addition, 81 of the top 100 websites uses HTTPS by default. Chrome 62, released in October 2017, started marking HTTP sites with entered data and all HTTP sites viewed in Incognito mode as "Not secure".

Google first announced its plans for the transition in September 2016.

In the current iteration of Chrome, version 64, the browser makes the distinction between non-encrypted HTTP and encrypted HTTPS sites in the address bar with a rather innocuous information icon on the former. According to Google, 68 percent of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows is already protected, and that number to jumps to 78 percent on Chrome OS and Mac. "Progress a year ago was incredible, and it's continued since then", Schechter said. And now they say time's up as the next rollout of Chrome will mark all those sites that are still on HTTP as "not secure". A new audit feature in Lighthouse, an automated tool for improving webpages, lets developers find which resources are loading via HTTP, and identifies those than can be upgraded simply by changing HTTP to HTTPS.

The U.S. and Canada are relative laggards-only about 87 percent of web traffic to Google in both these countries is encrypted.

July's Chrome 68 release will mark this process' third and final stage.
