Weather warning for heavy rain and snow in parts of Sussex

GETTY
FREEZING Temperatures are due to dip as low as-15C from tonight

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: "The warning for southern parts of the United Kingdom is largely as a result of the rainfall and snow on Tuesday night and through Wednesday".

Highways England also gave out a severe weather warning and urged people to plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel if they travel.

A weather warning is in place with snow falling across Essex.

The Met Office said: "A spell of snow is likely across parts of northern England and southern Scotland on Friday morning".

"Gusts of 45 to 50 miles per hour are likely quite widely in and near these showers, with 60mph gusts in places and close to 70mph at times in the most exposed coastal locations", the Met Office said.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for 6pm this evening all the way through to 1am on Wednesday, December 27.

"Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers".

Britain has seen one of the coldest nights of the year as parts of the country brace for heavy snow and strong winds of up to 70mph on Friday. Air travel could also be disrupted as a result.

However, forecasting snow is tricky and the forecast will be updated and revised as the day goes on.

The RAC said it saw a 15-20% spike in call-outs on Wednesday compared with the same time past year.

An RAC spokesman, Rod Dennis, said: "Some northern regions are set to see further snowfall in the early hours making driving conditions very hard, if not impossible where the heaviest snowfall occurs". We'd encourage all drivers to reduce their speed and take extra care, and of course to expect their journey to take much longer than usual.

"Heavy rain turning to snow in places".
