Chelsea Manning files to run for Senate seat

Chelsea Manning Has Filed To Run For The US Senate In Maryland

Manning is running as a Democrat for the seat now held by Sen. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin, 74, has not yet announced he would seek a third term in the Senate.

Manning filed her intent on January 11, according to a statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Chelsea Manning, the former Army intelligence analyst who spent several years in prison for leaking classified information, has filed to run as a Democratic candidate for Senate in Maryland.

The 30-year-old Manning listed a North Bethesda address in her FEC filing. She was convicted by court-martial in 2013 of espionage and other offenses for furnishing more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, an worldwide organization that publishes information from anonymous sources.

Wikileaks had published hundreds of thousands of documents that Miss Manning had downloaded from military computers - among them the Iraq and Afghan war logs, diplomatic cables and Guantanamo Bay files. Manning pleaded guilty to some charges but was acquitted of the most serious charge brought against her: aiding the enemy.

It was the biggest leak of classified documents in history. In an exclusive 2017 interview with ABC's Juju Chang for a special edition of Nightline, Manning said, "My intention was to draw attention to this ... and do the right thing". "This is about improving our standing in the world, this is about improving everything.' And maybe this can start a debate on that".

She came out as transgendered shortly after her sentencing, but the military denied her request for hormone therapy treatment while behind bars. At the time, her ACLU lawyer filed a lawsuit on her behalf in order to receive gender transition related health care.
