CES 2018, An Event All About Consumer Electronics, Hit By Major Blackout

Major power outage at CES 2018 Consumer leaving the show 1112018

Thousands were evacuated from the CES tech show in Las Vegas.

In an unprecedented turn, a major blackout happened during one of this year's biggest tech shows.

Heavy rainfall was to blame for the power outage that impacted the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Wednesday, according to officials with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

A storm system that dumped more than half as much rain as the Las Vegas Valley saw all of previous year also brought with it the wettest January day on record.

The robots served a racy but utilitarian function by drawing gawkers to the club, much the way provocatively clad "booth babes" lure CES visitors to wares on the convention floor. "No Problem. You can still dunk in the dark", continues to be heralded by many as a great example of real-time social media engagement.

The lights went out at around 11:13AM PST after over an inch of rain fell in Las Vegas, causing flash flooding across the city. Power was restored around 1:15 p.m. Intel had a tongue-in-cheek announcement for a product called "Blackout".

However, one of the most interesting trends was the way the tech and automotive industries doubled down on partnerships and cooperation at CES 2018.

Toyota Motor Corp announced on Monday a self-driving electric concept vehicle that it will tailor for companies to use for tasks like ride hailing and package delivery, underscoring how automakers are no longer simply building cars but also providing services to go with them. My colleague @jeffersongraham is inside South Hall here and says there is still power.

Others had humorous takes, with Intel's account calling it the "the biggest thing to hit CES since 5G". Most of its display was lit as hundreds of attendees passed by in the dark on their way to a brightly lit giant screen TV over South Hall.
