Walmart says it's raising wages thanks to the GOP tax plan

Even with the wage bump, many workers will struggle if they're the sole breadwinner. Thousands, and potentially millions of Americans voted for President Trump because he looked them in the eye and told them that that he would bring the lost jobs back, and would restore America's industrial might.

The changes will take effect in February and affect more than 1 million US Walmart employees, the company said. The wage change will apply to all hourly associates in the USA who work in Walmart stores, Sam's Clubs locations, eCommerce, logistics and Home Office, according to company officials. Walmart also announced that it would pay a one-time bonus up to $1,000, following in the footsteps AT&T T and Comcast CMCSA. (The company now offers six to eight weeks of partially paid maternity leave and no parental leave.) The Bentonville, Ark. -based company will also offer adoption benefits for $5,000 per child to full-time hourly and salaried employees.

Walmart is clear about the how, the why and the wherefore.

He added that "tax reform gives us the opportunity to be more competitive globally and to accelerate plans for the U.S". "We are early in the stages of assessing the opportunities".

Other employees received far better news on Thursday.

A robust labor market is finally pushing upward pressure on American wages after the pain of stagnation that was the mark of the Obama years. Even before the tax cut was enacted, the same pressures seemed to be in play last fall, with Walmart's competitor Target announcing an $11 minimum wage in September. Still, that's about a full percentage point lower than is typical in a healthy economy.

The company says the changes will affect more than 1 million of its United States employees. "We believe our Crewmembers should be the first to benefit", the company said in a letter to employees.

Walmart cited tax legislation that will help it save money for the reason of increasing its starting salary, but the moves also reflect the tight labor market in which employers are competing for workers. AT&T agrees: "Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by USA businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world", says a spokesman.

Wages growth continues to be one of the things lagging throughout this recovery and economists were expecting it to pick up this year - with or without tax reform. "In fact, we will increase our USA investment and pay a special bonus to our USA employees". The wage hike, up from $9 an hour, becomes effective in February and applies to all hourly associates in the USA, including at Walmart retail stores, Sam's Clubs, e-commerce, logistics and headquarters. Visa and Aflac announced they will put more into their workers' retirement schemes. In order to qualify for the maximum bonus, employees must have 20 years of uninterrupted service, or more. "To trumpet them right after this tax cut is nothing, in my mind, but announcing to the world that you - as a corporation - are happy indeed that your taxes have been cut". What's happening now is that these wicked "corporate interests" are "giving it away" to their workers.

When the Trump administration was trying to sell the public on the tax proposal, they promised that workers would see gains of about $4,000 over eight years.
