Iran has foiled plot to overthrow system

Khamenei: US and Britain fail to cause Iran unrest

"The enemy now repeatedly makes moves and they are defeated each time".

Protests criticizing the economic and political situation in Iran spread to more than 80 cities since late December and at least 21 people died.

"The solid people's stand will again tell the US, United Kingdom and those who live in London that you failed this time and will fail again".

Roughly 3,700 people were arrested during recent anti-government protests in Iran, one of the country's lawmakers claimed on Tuesday.

National Police spokesman Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi said Sunday that the majority of those detained had been released on bail, but that "the leaders of the disturbances are being held by the judiciary", the state-run Al-Alam News Agency reported.

On Monday, a separate judiciary official announced that a detainee had committed suicide in Tehran's Evin prison.

In Twitter posts and on his website, the country's supreme leader mocked Trump's assertion that "the Iranian government is afraid of US power", the New York Times reported.

The Iranian leader said, "This man who sits at the head of the White House, although he seems to be a very unstable man, he must realize that these extreme and psychotic episodes won't be left without a response".

U.K. Foreign Minister Boris Johnson told the British Parliament Tuesday that "it is vital that the people of Iran and government of Iran should understand that we in this country support right to peaceful demo within the law". In a series of tweets from the official account, he accused that all of Iran's adversaries - the US, Saudi Arabia and Israel - were involved in orchestrating the rallies. Iran has seen its largest anti-government protests since the disputed presidential election in 2009.

"These concerns must be addressed. We must provide answers within our means", Khamenei was quoted as saying, hinting that not only the government of Rouhani, but his own clerical leadership must also respond.

"Such repeated, theatrical and politically-tainted resolutions show the nature of the meddlesome United States regime, which the great Iranian nation has witnessed time and again over the past decade", the spokesperson said.
