Former Blackhawks Make Canada's Olympic Team

Vernon's Andrew Ebbett named to Canadian men's Olympic hockey team

Vancouverite Stefan Elliott is one of 25 men named to represent Team Canada in the 2018 Olympic Games hockey tournament.

The longest-term Blackhawks player to make the team was Rene Bourque, who is now playing for Djurgardens IF in the Swedish Hockey League.

Sean Burke has but one prediction he wasn't reluctant to share at the unveiling of Canada's Olympic hockey roster on Thursday.

Hockey Canada made the announcement on Thursday. Canada will go for a third straight Olympic men's hockey gold medal.

Here's a look at the six student athletes who will represent Team USA and what they have accomplished in their collegiate and national careers.

At Pyeongchang, Kelly could also bump into some former Senators on the US team - winger Bobby Butler, who scored 16 goals in 94 games with Ottawa between 2009 and 2012; defencemen Matt Gilroy, who played 14 games in 2011-12; and Mike Lundin, who played 11 games in 2012-13.

Johannson called Maxwell, 26, from Winter Park, Florida, an "elite puckhandling goaltender" and that was a huge factor in his selection. Lots of good leagues & players in Europe.

Badgers coach Tony Granato, who played in the 1988 Games, is the coach of this year's U.S. Olympic team, which does not feature any former Badgers players. Rene Bourque, 36, brings 725 NHL games, even if he has spent this season in the Swedish league.

He is best known for his tactic of dislodging the net during an opponent's breakaway, forcing leagues on two continents to make "Leggio Rules". After two more seasons with the Penguins and Blues, Lapierre left for Sweden, playing for MODO in the SHL before landing in the Swiss league with Lugano.

Leggio's use of the tactic during his AHL days prompted that league to add a rule that not only included the penalty shot, but the ejection of the offending goalie.

"This group will make Canada proud", said Burke. "We've seen all our players", said Burke. He also played for the United States at the Deutschland Cup in 2009 and 2017. The Americans outshot Slovakia, Russia and Germany by a combined 90-60, but were outscored 12-4 to finish the tournament 0-3.

"When we were interviewing Willie for the job one thing that stuck with me is he said: 'I don't think people really care the level of player they're going to watch at the Olympics". "We're excited at the depth".

Without NHL players Canada struggled to find the top of the Olympic podium, enduring a 50-year gold medal drought before finally reclaiming the crown of Olympic champions at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games. They've stuck with it, they won't give up... that's what our team is about.

"Oh, I think no matter what, whenever you put the jersey on and represent your country, it doesn't matter if it's exhibition or global play or the Olympics, you're always making sure that you're giving 100 percent", Schuler said. "That's the fun part of going to the Olympics - you never know who's going to win". The men follow February 15 with their preliminary opener against Switzerland.
