PS4 Sells 5.9 Million Units Worldwide During Holiday 2017

Sony announced today that it sold 5.9 million PlayStation 4 consoles during this holiday season, pushing total worldwide sales of the system to 73.6 million as of December 31. The total software sales for the PlayStation 4 now stand at 645 million units as of December 31st, 2017. Sony also noted that PS Plus now has a record 31.5 million subscribers and last month was the highest grossing one ever on PlayStation Store. The console sales have been steady so far, even if a slight decline in hardware sales this holiday, from 6.2 million to 5.9 million units.

He added: "I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community and our partners for helping us achieve such phenomenal milestones. We promise our unwavering commitment to bring more fantastic experiences to our fans, including exclusive games and innovative network services, as PS4 continues to flourish as the best place to play".

The PS4 system is now available in 127 countries and regions worldwide.

One thing is for certain, the presence of video games was larger compared to a year ago when we saw just a quick shot at the PS4 Pro, PlayStation VR, and a couple of seconds of PlayStation VR Worlds. PlayStation has delivered innovation to the market since the launch of the original PlayStation in Japan in 1994. That title is believed to be held by the PlayStation 2, which sold at least 155 million units in its lifespan.

Kazuo Hirai, CEO of Sony, spoke to the viewers and commented that PlayStation "has continued to build upon the positive momentum in the gaming world".
