Rare says the beta isn't a sample of the full game but a tailored experience "that offers a true taste of the pirate life".

It was announced today the closed beta for Sea of Thieves would kick off on January 24 and run through January 29.

For more on Sea of Thieves, check out Rare's guide to how players will progress in-game, or read about why developer Rare thinks returning to old franchises would be the "worst thing to do". Also, the beta will not be under NDA, meaning players can "stream, create videos, share clips, take screenshots", and more, without worrying about the giant foot of Microsoft coming down on them, which is more than welcome. Some of our favourites will no doubt be shared on Sea of Thieves' social channels and website.

Once this has been done, the game will appear in the games library 24 hours before the closed beta starts. You will also get a 14 day trial for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass. As far as access goes, anyone that signed up for the Sea of Thieves Insider Program before December 1 and anyone that pre-orders will be able to participate. Once it pops up, just download and install it.

If you have pre-ordered a physical version of the game through a retailer, you will need to redeem the code for the Black Dog cosmetic pack. Sea of Thieves releases on Xbox One and PC on March 20th, 2017.
