Trump Goes After 'CNN Flunky' Jake Tapper After Stephen Miller Interview

In a combative interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Miller disputed the broad outlines of Wolff's portrayal of President Trump while deflecting a number of specific queries posed by host Jake Tapper about episodes depicted in the book.

Mr. Miller denounced the book as "very poorly written fiction" and "garbage".

'Steve Bannon's eloquence in that description notwithstanding, it's tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments, so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive, ' Miller said.

Stephen Miller, the senior policy adviser for President Trump, lashed out at Breitbart News chairman Steve Bannon on Sunday for his contribution to a scathing book that shows the White House beset by ineptitude and disorder.

The conversation centered on "Fire and Fury", the new tell-all about the first year of the Trump presidency by magazine columnist Michael Wolff. Bannon referred to a 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr and a Russian Federation lawyer at Trump Tower as "treasonous" and suggested that it was highly likely that Trump Jr told his father about the meeting.

Mr Wolff says his book is based on more than 200 interviews with the President and his senior staff over an 18-month period. He also said Bannon had nothing to do with the writing of Trump's controversial travel ban.

When the interview turned to Mr. Trump's recent tweet declaring himself a "very stable genius", Mr. Miller again attacked CNN's reporting.

Before that, though, Miller vigorously defended Trump's political acumen and astute grasp of voter sentiment.

As Miller continued to vacillate between promoting his boss and condemning "fake news", Tapper said there was "one viewer you care about right now", accused Miller of being "obsequious" and sharply ended the interview.

Bannon is quoted in the book saying special counsel Robert Mueller was "going to crack Don Jr like an egg on national TV".

After having gone back and forth with the Trump aide for more than a few minutes, Tapper told Miller that he was trying to get to the question of the president's fitness for office.

At Camp David this weekend, Trump "unloaded" on Bannon, a White House official said, and was greeted with praise by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, among others. "If they were stronger, hopefully, you would not have something like that happen where you can say whatever comes to your head". Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author. Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well. The White House has repeatedly denied this, with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claiming the author "made up a lot of stories to try to sell books".

Late Saturday, Mr. Trump laid out the administration's 2018 legislative agenda while flanked by top-ranking House and Senate Republicans.
