Serena Williams halts Melbourne title defence

Rafael Nadal provides positive update on Australian Open progress

Defending champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from this month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 2018 Australian Open comes just four months after the 36-year-old gave birth to a daughter, Alexis Olympia, with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

But, having given birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in September, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has decided she is not quite feeling sharp enough to take part in the season's first major, which starts on January 15.

Ex-first racket of the world Andy Murray and Serena Williams will miss the Open championship of Australia on tennis.

But Williams said that she would be back at the Australian Open once she was back up to snuff.

"After competing in Abu Dhabi I realized that although I am super close, I'm not where I personally want to be", Williams said in a statement.

She had won the tournament seven times, with her first victory coming in 2003.

"Serena transcends the sport in the way she approaches all aspects of her life". Murray has returned home after failing to recover from a hip injury sustained past year, while Nishikori has been on the sidelines since August due to a torn tendon in his right wrist. There is also uncertainty over whether former champions Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Rafa Nadal, the latter of which arrived in Melbourne earlier on Friday, will be fit to take to the court. Her confidence was reportedly shaken after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in her comeback match at the French Open. Craig Tiley has always been adamant all the stars would be in town, but his instinctive optimism would make him a very good economic forecaster for any government in need of a boost.
