Packers promote Brian Gutekunst as new general manager

How to pronounce name of new Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

Gutekunst, Wolf and vice president of player administration and player finance Russ Ball are the three top internal candidates to be the team's next general manager.

A league source said that Gutekunst wants Eliot Wolf to stay on personnel staff, although Wolf could depart to join former Packers staffers John Dorsey and Alonzo Highsmith in Cleveland. The Packers named Gutekunst the GM before another team could do it first. Gutekunst was in the running to replace Ted Thompson in Green Bay, so it can not be ruled out that he will be promoted to general manager.

Gutekunst has spent 19 years working in the Packers' personnel department. He has been the Packers' director of player personnel since 2016.

Saturday morning NFL's Ian Rapoport tweeted Green Bay had requested an interview with Schneider but was denied. He was promoted to his current position two years ago. ESPN reported that the Packers also interviewed ex-Buffalo Bills GM Doug Whaley.

Gutekunst may not have been the Packers' first choice.

With Brian Gutekunst securing the job, only five days after it officially was open, Ball's candidacy has collapsed.

Gutekunst played football at UW-La Crosse for two years, then became an assistant coach for the team after a shoulder injury cut his college career short.

McCarthy did not speak specifically about any concerns about Ball, but he repeatedly spoke of the importance of "fit" between him and a new general manager when he did his end-of-season press conference on Thursday.
