UP Hajj Office Colored Saffron Under BJP Lead Yogi Adityanath Govt

The boundary wall of the UP State Haj Committee after it was repainted

The exterior walls of the building, used by Muslims as a transit place on their way to pilgrimage in Mecca, was initially green-and-white in colour.

The Haj office compound wall got a bright saffron shade within days of the BJP government reducing the number of holidays allotted to State-recognised madrasas in the 2018 calendar.

"Further painting of the boundary wall has been stopped, and instructions have been issued to officials that painting and maintenance of the boundary wall should be done as per directives", he said.

Yogi Adityanath, who is always seen in saffron and is referred to as Maharajji by his followers, is known for his predilection for the colour and appears to surround himself with it wherever he travels. The BJP-led state government blamed the contractor for the incident and said that strict action will be taken against him.

The work was done by the UP estates department late on Thursday night and the Haj office staff was not immediately available for a reaction, Friday being a holiday. Is saffron an anti-national colour?

Saffron colour is majorly related with the Hinduism and also associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

After the BJP government painted the Haj House in Uttar Pradesh's capital city yesterday, many Opposition parties and Muslims objected to the move.

While interacting with the media persons All India Shia Personal Law Board spokesman Yasoob Abbas took strong exception to the change in colour and said "What is this?"

However, Minority Affairs and Haj minister Mohsin Raza was even candid in saying that the saffron depicted "energy" and that there was no harm in colouring the wall in saffron as it would save it from getting stained as well. "There is no need for controversy in such things, saffron is an energetic and bright looking colour, the building looks attractive".

"This is peculiar politics".
