Claire's says initial test results found no asbestos in makeup

Out of an abundance of caution, additional testing is underway.

Back in July, Justice for Girls pulled one of their products after a North Carolina TV station claimed tests came back positive for asbestos in at least one of their products.

Despite decades of evidence that asbestos exposure can cause malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other illnesses, the toxin is still being used in some unexpected and potentially risky ways.

Kristiana Warner told WPRI-TV that she was already working with a lab on another case and made a decision to have her six-year-old daughter's makeup tested - leading to the discovery of asbestos in one product, and later in 17 samples.

It all began when Kristi Warner, a clerk for a Rhode Island law firm that specializes in asbestos litigation, got suspicious about her 6-year-old daughter's Claire's glitter makeup kit.

In total, 17 samples of makeup were tested from Claire's stores in nine different states, including eye shadows, blushes and compact powders.

"We will continue to honor returns for any customers remaining uncomfortable", Jarema said.

In the interim we have stopped sales of the products and are issuing full refunds to concerned customers.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen and exposure to it has been linked to life-threatening diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, according to the CDC.

A popular store has pulled makeup kits off of the shelves after a report that the makeup contained asbestos.

The company posted a statement on their Twitter account Saturday afternoon, saying they would be pulling the products as a "precautionary measure" while they conduct their own investigation into the claims.

The kit was sent for a lab test and came out positive for asbestos, a cancer causing substance.

"We work closely with our vendors to ensure our products are tested and assessed in line with the relevant country regulations and guidelines. Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action", Claire's further stated.
