Rate of pregnant women in Cali using pot set to skyrocket

For the study, researchers examined data on more than 279,000 pregnant women who were treated at Kaiser Permanente facilities that did universal screening for marijuana use as part of standard prenatal care.

The number of pregnant moms younger than 18 using marijuana rose from 12.5 percent to nearly 22 percent.

However, marijuana use was reported to have increased among pregnant women in all of the study's age groups from 2009 to 2016.

It was also discovered that pot-use among girls under 18 in the coastal state increased as well, climbing from 9.8 percent to 19 percent.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cautions that the effects or marijuana on fetus are not clear and that it could lead to low birth rate and developmental problems.

The study tested more than 30,000 women during each year of the eight-year study, using questionnaires and analyzing urine toxicology tests. A 2013 study published in Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey researched the effects of marijuana use on lactation, under the guise that marijuana will soon become more widely available in the USA, and didn't find conclusive evidence to support treating marijuana and tobacco use the same way.

Nevertheless, there were also women who stated that they hadn't used marijuana in the last month, although they had a positive urine test.

Moreover, the same report suggests that the number of people smoking weed in California, pregnant or not, may have increased and that using cannabis has become more acceptable in the state.

"In California, medical marijuana was legalized in 1996, and prenatal use may further escalate in 2018 when recreational marijuana is available legally", the Kaiser team noted.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), more research is needed on the effects of marijuana use on developing babies.

Among the research included in the document is one involving pregnant laboratory animals that were exposed to the illicit drug.

Babies born to women who used marijuana during their pregnancies have been shown to respond to visual stimuli with reactions like increased trembling and a high-pitched cry, which could indicate problems with neurological development. Instead, try eating something small - like a granola bar or a few crackers - before you get out of bed in the morning, eat more but smaller meals more frequently, stock up on ginger ale and bland foods like chicken broth, and take comfort in the fact that, at the very least, morning sickness can be a sign of a healthy pregnancy, even if it's not a particularly fun one. In aggregated 2002-2012 data, 14.6% of United States pregnant adolescents reported past-month use.
