Venus Williams won't be charged in fatal auto crash

Venus Williams will not be charged in the collision that led to the death of a passenger in another vehicle in Florida earlier this year, according to multiple media outlets quoting local police.

No one is to blame for the fatal June 9 accident that resulted in the death of 78-year-old Jerome Barson, Palm Beach Gardens police announced Wednesday after concluding an investigation.

After his death, the Barson family filed a wrongful death suit against Williams.

"Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case", the report said. Williams then tried to get fully across but the Barsons' light turned green and their vehicle slammed into Williams' SUV.

After the initial police report was made public, Malcolm Cunningham, Williams' attorney released a statement, saying, "Ms. Williams entered the intersection on a green light". As she started to cross, a dark sedan had cut her off, forcing her to stop. The Barsons' 2016 Hyundai Accent hit Williams' SUV at 40 miles per hour (65 kph).

The investigative report concluded that neither Barson nor Williams violated the other's right of way. "The police report read, "(Williams) is at fault for violating the right of way of (the other driver)".

Williams' attorney didn't immediately return an email seeking comment.

Mr Barson died 13 days later from injuries including severed arteries, organ damage and a fractured spine.

Weeks after the crash, Williams competed at Wimbledon, losing in the finals on July 15 to Garbine Muguruza.

Williams initially claimed that she did nothing illegal to cause the accident, and Florida law enforcement eventually stated that they believed her, after reviewing footage from a nearby surveillance camera that caught the whole thing.

She has career on-court earnings of almost $40 million, her own clothing line and endorsement deals with Ralph Lauren, Kraft foods, Tide detergent and Wilson sporting goods.
