Here's how Isaiah Thomas found out he was traded

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas

Thomas shouldn't rush to join his new team. So when he found out Danny Ainge had traded him, he didn't take it too well.

He put the city on his back and started the playoff run just days after his younger sister was tragically killed in a vehicle accident.

Thomas says he learned of the trade by way of a phone call from Danny Ainge, who serves as general manager and president of basketball operations for the Celtics. "But I'm going to be back, and I'm going to be the same player again".

Thomas is as close as ever to making his debut with Cleveland, which acquired him last summer in the blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston.

"That's insane", Thomas said when he first found out. But it's... I mean, if that's what he wants. "What are you talking about?" My kids about to start school. But as long as he's good to go and at full strength come playoff time, LeBron James will be glad to have Thomas around. "I'm just trying to get as close as 100 percent as possible and to be out there to be special". I would be mad if I went to a weak-ass team. "I gave my heart to that city and organization". I'm not mad. I'd be mad if I went to a weakass team.

Celtics fans did react negatively to the deal at first, but since Boston now stands at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, it seems as though they've accepted Kyrie as their new point guard of the present and the future.

The Cavs' official timeline for Thomas' recovery provided to the media in late September called for Thomas to be back playing games by the first of the year.

Thomas, 28, is coming off a career season in which he averaged 28.9 points for the Celtics before his injured hip forced him to miss the final three games of their loss to the Cavs in the Eastern Conference finals.
