New Fire Hits the 405 Freeway, in the Heart of Los Angeles

The new fire was situated in the Sepulveda Pass, where the San Diego (I-405) Freeway cuts a path through the mountains to connecting West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

Fire Department spokesman Margaret Stewart says the fire was reported at 4:52 a.m. Wednesday and is burning uphill, driven by topography rather than winds. The 405 North freeway remains closed between the 10 and the 101 freeways, making it challenging to access some local businesses.

The fire led to the closure of multiple freeways, include the very congested 405.

Umansky, who has opened his home to one family and said another two were on their way, said the street most affected this morning was south Casiano Road in Bel-Air.

The new fire came as part of a series of wind-driven fires that had destroyed more than 180 homes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

According to a message on the Getty Center's website, the Getty Center and Getty Villa will be closed through at least December 6 to protect the collections from smoke from the fires.

The fire is just under five miles away from UCLA, which chose to cancel classes for the day. Those in the area were ordered by the Los Angeles Fire Department to evacuate. "With winds like this, it can be anything", Garcetti said, referring to the powerful Santa Ana winds that continued to blow across the region.

At sunset Tuesday, rescuers were trying to save thousands of farm animals in the Shadow Hills area, including horses, sheep and alpacas, from encroaching flames.

The Creek Fire started at 3:43 a.m.

Nicknamed the Skirball Fire, it was reported at 5 a.m. near Mulholland Drive, a five-minute drive from the Skirball Cultural Center. "We continue to monitor the situation and will issue updates as we have them".
