John Travolta's 'Gotti' movie release date pulled after losing distributor

Lionsgate Drops John Travolta's Mob Drama “Gotti,” Sells Film Back to Producers (Exclusive)

The film follows John Gotti (Travolta), the infamous head of the Gambino crime family, as he rises to notoriety in the late 1980s and brings his son into a life of crime.

John Travolta's "Gotti" is making headlines for reportedly being dropped from release a mere 10 days before opening in theaters.

A long-planned new biopic of NY mob boss John Gotti has been pulled from release two weeks before it was scheduled to open in the US.

But, in an interview with Deadline published Wednesday morning, Travolta pushed back, saying the speculation surrounding the fate of "Gotti" was "bordering on fake news". It was originally set for release on December 15, but will likely be moved to 2018. Now that the film will no longer be released under the Lionsgate Premiere banner, the producers will begin to meet with new distributors.

The news of the film's rescheduled release comes a month after Travolta was accused of sexual battery on a 21-year-old male. It wasn't easy to get Lionsgate to give it up. "I invited his group, they saw it and bought it", Travolta said. About three weeks ago, Travolta claims to have personally sought out a new financier: Edward Walson, a producer of Broadway plays who's also backed such films as Woody Allen's Café Society and Wonder Wheel.

"Our mistake was we should have said something right then, and discussed our plan for the film", Travolta said. "We didn't anticipate this speculation that is so grossly wrong", he told the outlet. However, the film's star John Travolta, isn't happy that the news makes it sound like the film was cut.

His real-life wife, Kelly Preston portrays his wife in the film, Victoria Gotti.

Directed by former Entourage actor Kevin Connolly, using a script penned by Lem Dobbs and Leo Rossi, Gotti began shooting in July of previous year.

Travolta and Fiore Films were some of the constants as the film become a realization.

According to Deadline, it was not Lionsgate's idea to jettison Gotti from its ranks.
