Chad Morris leaves SMU to accept Arkansas head coaching job

Mike Leach reportedly emerging as candidate for another head coaching job and it’s not Tennessee

Arkansas hired SMU HC Chad Morris to serve in the same capacity. A deal could be worked out as soon as Wednesday. Morris' Mustangs went 7-5 this season in what was a fantastic turnaround effort by the coach - his crew went just 2-10 in his inaugural campaign back in 2015. Before Morris took over the program, SMU went 3-21 in the two season prior to his arrival. He also had a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Tulsa in 2010 following 16 seasons as a head coach at five different high schools in Texas.

This will be Morris' second head-coaching job.

The Razorbacks are looking for a replacement for Bret Bielema, who was sacked last month.

Morris replaces Bret Bielema at Arkansas.

He was the architect of high-scoring offenses at Texas high schools and Clemson before rebuilding SMU's program.

"The future is tremendously bright at the University of Arkansas with the addition of Chad Morris", Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said in a statement. He won three state titles overall and played in six state championship games.

With Malzahn out of the picture, Thamel reported Monday that Yurachek would target Morris and Memphis' Mike Norvell, both of whom Yurachek observed during his time in the AAC. SMU improved to 5-7 past year, including a 38-16 win over No. 11 Houston.

The Mustangs qualified for a bowl game this season for the first time since 2012 when June Jones was the head coach for SMU.
