Yemen fighting will lead to 'more tragedy'

Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh

Yemen's civil war has killed more than 10,000 people since 2015, displaced more than two million people, caused a cholera outbreak infecting almost one million people and put the country on the brink of starvation.

In a televised speech Monday, Houthi leader Abdel Malek al Houthi declared victory against Saleh.

Warfare between the former allies has torn densely populated Sanaa for days as Houthi fighters seized control of much of the capital and on Monday blew up Mr Saleh's house while coalition jets bombed their own positions.

The country's former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was killed on Monday by Houthi rebels.

Speaking later on television, President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, the leader of the internationally recognized government, called on Yemenis to unite against the Houthis. Both sides have reported that at least 16 people were killed in the fighting, which began on Wednesday when armed Houthi fighters entered the main mosque complex, firing RPGs and grenades.

Saudi Arabia, accusing Iran of backing the rebels, intervened in Yemen on behalf of the government the following year.

However, evidence analysed by a research team of missile experts at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, indicate that the missile's warhead flew unimpeded over Saudi defences and almost hit its target, Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, according to the report.

He said the Houthis have put a stop to a massive plot, which represented a serious threat to the country and to its stability and security, as well as the unity of its people, by handing it over to its enemies, after they had failed to capture it in almost three years of battle. "Definitely Saudi Arabia will not allow Iran to threaten it", he said.

Unverified footage circulated showing his bloodied body, just days after he tore up his alliance with the Houthis following almost three years in which they had jointly battled the Saudi-led coalition.

The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the November 5 explosion in Riyadh, saying they fired a long-range ballistic missile that travelled more than 800km over the border with Saudi Arabia.

The staement read "Saleh and his supporters have been killed by Houthis rebels".

"Let's join hands to end the control of these ... criminal gangs and ... open a new chapter to rid our beloved Yemen of this nightmare", Hadi said from Saudi Arabia, where he lives in exile. "But this is far from over - Saleh was an icon in Yemen for millions, and so his death will not go slowly or unanswered".

"Iran's win will definitely be reflected on the struggle for regional influence. No one will defeat it then", Al-Beel said. It was said that they were the strongest party, and that any attempt at driving them out would lead to a bloody war between the two parties in the city's historic streets.

The conflict has pushed Yemen to the brink of mass starvation and triggered what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
